Acupuncture is a complementary or alternative therapy. It is a form of ancient Chinese medicine in which many fine needles are inserted into the skin at specific points in the body to relieve pain and certain symptoms in some conditions. Unlike many conventional western medical treatments, the use of acupuncture is not always evidence based.
Acupuncturists (practitioners) believe that an energy, or 'life force', known as Qi flows through the body in channels(meridians). Practitioners believe that when Qi cannot flow freely through the body, it can cause illness. They also believe that acupuncture can restore the flow of Qi, and so restore health.
The concept of acupuncture is being increasingly understood in general medicine. It is based on the idea that acupuncture needles stimulate nerve endings and alter the way your brain functions, particularly in relation to how your body responds to pain.
It is often used to treat pain conditions such as headache (including migraine and tension type headaches), lower back pain and dental pain, but is also commonly used against conditions such as infertility, anxiety and asthma.
Five element treatments are generally not symptomatically based, but have the aim that by treating the person as a whole and the underlying cause of imbalance, all other symptoms will then in-turn become restored to their natural state Treatment can also be thought of as regularly experiencing the benefits of a good night's sleep or effects of a relaxing holiday, whereby the body is given space to heal, making you feel like 'yourself again'. Because acupuncture considers every bodily function to be connected and interdependent, it recognizes the role emotions play in illness and disease. The overall aim of treatment is to restore the body's equilibrium.
Cosmetic Acupuncture is a safe and painless, non-surgical method of reducing the signs of aging. Though it can sometimes be referred to as an Acupuncture Facelift or Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture, it is more than a cosmetic procedure - it is a rejuvenation and revitalization process designed to help the whole body look and feel younger.
If you choose to go ahead with acupuncture therapy, make sure that your acupuncturist is fully qualified and practices the treatment under safe and sterile conditions.
