Frequently Asked Questions

Answers By Our Experienced Doctors
    • What is acne?

Sebaceous glands are attached to hair follicles which are small holes in your skin that individual hairs grow out of. The sebaceous glands produce sebum to keep hair and skin lubricated. But if too much sebum is produced, it mixes with dead skin cells and begins to block the follicle.

This is when acne occurs. Depending on whether the plugged follicles are close to the skin’s surface or open to the air, a whitehead or blackhead will form. Bacteria living on the skin (which is usually harmless) can then infect the blocked follicles causing spots.

    • What is acne scarring?

Scarring is a long-term effect of acne. When you squeeze an infected spot, you create pressure that can spread the infection. This occurs both above the skin and deep inside the pore which can cause or increase scarring.

    • Can acne be caused by eating greasy food or poor hygiene?

There are lots of myths surrounding acne and these are probably 2 of the most common. Although eating a healthy diet is good for your general health, there is no evidence that links diet to acne. And most of the biological triggers for acne occur below your skin meaning that surface cleanliness is not the issue.

    • What is prescribed skincare?

As a doctor-led clinic, we are able to prescribe skincare products and ranges that are only available on prescription. This may be because they have more active ingredients than off-the-shelf skincare and/or need to be used following the correct medical advice. Prescribed skincare can be particularly useful when targeting skin conditions such as acne and hyperpigmentation.

    • What is a skin peel?

By expertly applying a chemical exfoliant to the skin, outer layers are exfoliated and eventually peel away. The newer skin revealed is smoother and clearer to help treat acne and acne scarring.*

    • What is sublative face rejuvenation?

This cutting-edge elōs Plus treatment from Syneron Candela uses bi-polar radio frequency to deliver energy to the skin’s deeper layers without troubling the epidermis (the upper layer of skin). We use a handheld applicator with multi-electrode pins to deliver the energy in a fractional way that ablates the skin’s surface with heat. Areas that are not ablated act like a reservoir for cells to encourage healing and the production of more collagen.

As collagen levels are boosted, skin looks refreshed and rejuvenated. This can help to improve acne scarring.*
