Age Spots, Sun Spots or Liver Spots!?

Age Spots – As you get older, you may start to notice the appearance of small, dark, flat spots on your skin. They are most common on the face, hands, arms and shoulders, but exactly what are they?

You may be left feeling confused with the numerous names floating around that are given to these small marks. They are often called “Liver Spots”, a name which originated when they were thought to be directly linked to liver concerns, but this has since been proven not to be the case. Many of us associate them with age as they are most common in men and women over the age of 50, which is where the name “Age Spots” comes from. But they are in fact not a direct result of ageing. For that reason, you could argue that “Sun Spots” is the most accurate interpretation of these marks due to the fact that they form as a result of sun exposure and damage over time.

Sun spots are completely harmless, but they can be rather unsightly, which is why a lot of people seek cosmetic treatment to reduce their appearance. There are steps you can take to try and prevent sun spots, mainly by taking precautions in the sun. Always protect exposed skin by regularly applying a sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection. A minimum SPF of 15 is recommended, especially throughout the warm summer months. If you are looking to treat age spots that are already present, there are a number of options available to you.

Skincare – Expert skincare products may gradually fade your sun spots over time. At H&A Clinic, we can create a bespoke treatment plan using our range of expert products from Obagi, Epionce, Skinceuticals and Neostrata.

Laser Therapy – Over several sessions the appearance of sun spots is reduced by destroying melanin-producing cells without damaging the surrounding skin.

Dermaroller Therapy – this is an effective technique that stimulates natural skin rejuvenation and repair that can be combined with other treatments if necessary.

Chemical Skin Peel – the outer layers of your skin are chemically burned to initiate healing over the course of several treatments.

Our doctor-led team at Health & Aesthetic Clinic offer a holistic approach to non-surgical cosmetic and beauty treatments. All of our treatments and services are designed especially for you, with bespoke treatment plans consisting of the highest standards of quality and care.
